Day One
This is when I first approached Winston with the idea of trying something new everyday. He seemed enthusiastic about trying it and encouraged the documentation of it and through discussion throughout the day we decided oh making it something to benefit other people as well as ourselves.
We started the day by making Caramel Apples (recipe above) and took them to the drum circle at Malcolm X Park where we decided to give them out to strangers to try and make new friends. Also at Malcolm X, there was a clothing swap in which Winston and I successfully participated in (for the first time!) by both bringing some old clothes and leaving with something new.
While at the drum circle, I noticed someone sitting by themselves so I suggested to Winston that we talk to him. His name was Benz and he’s a lawyer who’s lived in DC for about 7 years but was thinking about leaving his career. I asked him what he would do if he could choose any job and he told us he wanted to be a film maker and so we talked to him about it for a long time, hoping to inspire him to pursue something more personally rewarding. We also met a few other new friends including Janine, Josef and Alex, who came and hung out with us afterward.
Me and Benz
As we were leaving the park, most of the people were already gone but Winston noticed these three guys playing dice and gambling on a bench so he asked me if I had ever played dice before and I told him I didn’t know how. He said he didn’t either and asked me if I wanted to go and see if they would teach us and so I agreed. The guys seemed really sketched out that we were even talking to them and then they didn’t really speak any English but one of the guys did his best to try and explain the rules. The only thing I really understood was you wanted to roll two 3’s, two 5’s or two 6’s. Winston bet $2 and won $2 so we had a total of $4 until I played and lost all $4.
I felt that the day was an excellent start to our project and felt like it was going to be very rewarding.
